Moving Heavy Equipment Between Sites in Egypt: Transport, Permits and Route Planning
A 22-tonne tracked excavator was booked to start stripping a plot in New Damietta on a Sunday morning. It reached the site on Monday afternoon. Nothing was wrong with the machine. The trailer sent to collect it was an ordinary flatbed, and sitting on that deck the excavator would have been too tall for an underpass on the planned route — a fact the transporter established in the yard rather than at the bridge. A low-deck trailer had to be found, the route re-checked, and a full crew spent a day being paid to wait.
That is what heavy equipment transport in Egypt actually looks like when it goes wrong, and almost none of it is about the machine. It is about height, width, weight, the road between two gates, and paperwork that takes longer than the drive.
Mobilisation is a job, not a line item
On a quotation, transport tends to appear as a single figure. On the ground it is a sequence, and every step in it can stall:
- Finding a trailer of the right type, free on the right day.
- Establishing whether the load is legally abnormal on that route, and obtaining a permit if it is.
- Loading the machine safely, with a competent operator and firm level ground.
- The drive itself, within whatever time windows apply to heavy vehicles on that corridor.
- Unloading at the far end, which needs the same firm ground and room to manoeuvre a long vehicle.
- The return leg, which is a second move even though nobody thinks about it until the invoice arrives.
Treat mobilisation and demobilisation as two separate journeys with their own risks.
The four numbers that decide the whole move
Before anyone books a truck, four figures settle almost every question that follows.
Transport weight. Not the brochure operating weight — the weight that will actually sit on the deck, with or without attachments, combined with the trailer and tractor unit. Axle loading, not just gross weight, governs whether a vehicle is legal and whether a rural bridge will take it.
Transport width. The widest point of the machine as it will travel. Tracked excavators are often narrower with the tracks retracted, and wide buckets, blades and counterweights frequently come off to travel separately.
Transport height. This is the number that catches people, because it is not a property of the machine at all: it is deck height plus machine height. The same excavator on a standard flatbed and on a low-deck trailer are two different loads as far as an underpass is concerned, and cabs, exhaust stacks, folded booms and masts all count.
Transport length. Including any overhang, which needs marking, and the tractor unit — because length determines whether the vehicle can turn into a site entrance or reverse down a village street.
Measure these. A tape and ten minutes in the yard are cheaper than a stopped convoy.
Matching the machine to the trailer

The last two rows are where budgets get surprised. A tower crane is not one delivery but a convoy, an erection crew, and a mobile crane hired specifically to put it up and take it down — and the same is true in miniature of any large mobile crane near its road-legal limit.
Permits and abnormal loads
Road transport of loads that exceed normal dimensions or weights is regulated in Egypt, and permits for abnormal loads are issued by the competent roads and land-transport authority, with traffic authorities involved where routes run through governorate roads and urban areas. Thresholds, documentation and validity are set by those authorities and change from time to time, so confirm the current requirements for your specific route rather than relying on a previous job.
In practice the transporter — who owns the vehicle and holds the operating licences — normally applies. What matters for you is the questions you put in writing before the machine is scheduled:
- Is this load classed as abnormal on the intended route, on weight, width, height or length?
- Who applies for the permit, and what lead time does the application need?
- Is the permit route-specific, and does it still cover the move if the route changes?
- Are escort vehicles required, and who provides them?
- Are there restrictions on when the load may move — times of day, days of the week?
- What is the validity window, and what happens to it if the site slips a day?
An abnormal load stopped at a checkpoint for want of a permit is not a paperwork problem — it is a machine on a roadside, a crew on a site, and a question of who pays for both. That paperwork is usually the longest lead item in a mobilisation, which is why the transport conversation should start when the machine is booked, not the night before it moves.
Route planning is where Egyptian moves are won or lost
The straight-line distance between two sites tells you very little. What matters is the specific road:
- Vertical clearance. Underpasses, bridges, footbridges, tunnels, signage gantries and low overhead cables. Height is unforgiving: there is no partial success.
- Bridge and road weight limits. Delta and canal-side roads carry crossings that were never designed for a loaded lowbed, and the diversion around one can add hours.
- Road width and turning geometry. A long articulated vehicle needs swept-path room at every junction, not just carriageway width — old agricultural roads and village approaches are where this bites.
- Urban windows. Heavy vehicle movement through congested corridors is time-sensitive; a move planned for the wrong hour can lose most of a day sitting still.
- The last hundred metres at both ends. Gate width, the turning circle inside the site, whether the truck can reverse in, and whether it can stand to unload without blocking a public road.
- Ground at the unloading point. Ramps need firm, level ground. A lowbed unloading a 25-tonne excavator onto soft fill or across a cross-slope is genuinely dangerous, which is why unloading points should be chosen and prepared before the truck is called.
A few photographs of the gate, the approach road and the intended unloading area, sent to the transporter, prevent more failed deliveries than any other single measure.
Loading, securing and the handover
The move itself is routine when the discipline is there:
- The machine is driven onto the deck by a competent operator, not whoever is nearest.
- Booms, buckets and blades are lowered and rested; swing locks, pins and park brakes are engaged.
- Removed attachments travel secured separately, not loose on the deck.
- Chains and binders go to the designated tie-down points, front and rear, in numbers matched to the machine's weight.
- Doors and windows locked, mirrors folded, battery isolator set as the owner requires.
- Overhanging parts are flagged, and the final overall height is measured before the vehicle leaves the yard.
Then the part that saves arguments: a written condition report at both ends. Hour meter reading, fuel level, tyre or track condition, photographs of every side of the machine and of any existing damage, signed by both parties. Whether the hire is wet or dry changes who is responsible for damage in service — the distinction between renting with and without an operator is worth settling in the same conversation — but transit damage is a separate question, answered only by what was photographed on the day.
What drives transport cost — factors, not figures
Rates for equipment and transport in Egypt are agreed per project rather than published, and the variables are consistent:
- Distance, and whether the trailer runs back empty. A one-way move with no return load is priced differently from one where the vehicle has work in both directions.
- Machine class and trailer type. A low-deck or multi-axle trailer is a scarcer, more expensive asset than a standard flatbed.
- Permits and escorts. Abnormal-load moves carry administrative cost and often escort vehicles.
- Disassembly and assist cranes. Counterweights, boom sections and tower crane components need a crane and a crew at both ends.
- Waiting time. Trucks sitting at a gate because the site is not ready are the most avoidable line on any mobilisation invoice.
- Access difficulty. A narrow entrance can force a smaller trailer, and more trips.
- Timing. Night or restricted-window moves cost more than daytime runs on open roads.
Because every hire carries a move in and a move out, transport weighs far more heavily on a short hire than a long one — which is one of the reasons a week's excavator hire rarely costs a quarter of a month's. When you browse available machines, the class you pick is also a transport decision: a smaller machine that can do the work often travels on a simpler trailer with no permit at all.
The brief that gets an accurate transport quote
Send this and the guesswork disappears:
- Machine make and model, or class and operating weight, plus the attachments travelling with it.
- Exact pickup and delivery addresses, with a map pin for each rather than a description.
- Access at both ends: gate width, approach road, turning space, surface, and any overhead obstruction.
- The date the machine must be working on site, and any time window that applies.
- Whether ramps or a crane are needed to unload, and who supplies them.
- Who operates the machine on and off the trailer.
- Whether the return leg is booked now or later.
Most late arrivals trace back to a missing item on that list, usually the third or fifth. Send the machine, the two addresses and photographs of both entrances when you request a project quote, and the transport can be planned with the hire instead of after it.
